Contemporary mountain bike design is diverse, catering to a range of riding styles, and the recommendations
that follow reflect this. From this wide range. your choice of bike will be influenced by the kind of riding you
enjoy, or need to do most of.
A full on down hill bike, with 8" of travel in the suspension and massive knobbly tyres looks the business and if you spend most of your time on the bike at trail centres around the country, up to your elbows in mud, then such a heavy duty bike is for you. However, if you need to spend an amount time commuting or out on the cycle paths of Britain, you would be better suited to a hard tail or full susser cross country.
if you need help deciding which bike is right for you, come in to the shop and we can discuss your needs. We have a range of demonstration models, from steel frame hard tails(Orange R8 and P7) to the most popular full suspension bikes (Giant Anthem and Orange 5), and taking one or two out for a ride will often help you make your decision.
Featured Mountain Bikes
Though we no longer maintain our product catalogue online, we have chosen a small selection of our recommendations to feature on the website, which you will find below, along with a link to the manufacturers product specification.
Orange Pure 7
This is the workhorse that will do just about anything the rider is brave enough to attempt. It is a great design, combining the comfort of a steel frame with 130mm of travel in the front fork and a well balanced geometry, this bike will inspire confidence on the steep sections going down and give great rear wheel traction on the way up.
The predecessor of this model, the P7, left the store in many different guises, from big forks with 2.4 tyres to rigid forks with slick tyres and hub gears, as well as a single speed winter set up!.
Giant Talon 29er
Combine a lightweight alloy frame with 100mm of travel in the forks, then match it up with 29” wheels, great tyres and you are onto a winner! The market for the 29er is growing in popularity every year and Giant are taking notice, offering a range of bikes in this category. With larger wheels and tyre contact a less aggressive tyre tread is needed, which means that there is less rolling resistance and a faster ride.
Although not suited to very technical riding (we sell bikes for that too) these bikes are great for cross country, bridleways and tracks. Equipped with a nice build set including hydraulic brakes, Shimano gearing and lockable forks all for £800 this is a very popular cycle to work bike.
Giant Revel 3
Our entry level mountain bike is a great bike for your first off road adventures. For a coast to coast challenge or taking the kids to the park this model is always a winner. You get an alloy frame, suspension forks and a Shimano gear system, there are no gimmicks with this bike.
It is very simple and will always last longer than something with rear suspension or disc brakes and, because all of your money is going towards quality of components and frame, this bike will last and last.
Orange Five
Do we even presume to try and tell you about the Five?! Hand built here in the UK, the Five is probably the most sought after full susser ever made. Highly customisable, with choice of colour, forks and components and a design that has been constantly refined over ten years, it is easy to see how this bike gets its reputation.
Needless to say, this is the most used of our mountain bike demonstrators, and when it isn't with one of our customers you can be certain it is with a member of staff! If the Five is something you are thinking about adding to your stable, then book one for a demo weekend and give it a try!
Giant Anthem
The best way to describe the Anthem range is that it climbs the hills like a high tail (or, would you believe, better), goes down hill like an Orange 5 (but with 1" less travel in the fork) and, dependent on the depth of your pockets, as light as a road bike. If your are a competetive soul who loves all out speed, then the Anthem is humming your tune!
This is a truly awesome bike, which we would love for you to come and try out as, like the Orange Five, this bike will sell itself.
